Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago–2nd Floor Faculty Commons

Chicago (Hyde Park)

Eckenhoff Saunders provided architecture and interior design services to renovate the second floor of the University of Chicago’s American School building into a new hub for attending physicians. The project transformed an existing office suite into a collaborative, faculty-focused environment that supports individual work, informal interaction, meetings, and interdisciplinary engagement.

Working within an occupied campus building, the design balances functionality, flexibility, and constructability while integrating modern building systems into the existing facility. The project team coordinated closely with University stakeholders to develop a space that enhances the faculty experience while minimizing disruption to ongoing campus operations. Priorities included offering productivity zones with breakout areas that support staff connection and wellness.

Our services include architectural design, interior architecture, engineering coordination, construction documentation, and construction administration. Throughout the project, Eckenhoff Saunders collaborated with the University to maintain project schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
