North Shore Congregation Israel

Glencoe, Illinois

Located on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, North Shore Congregation Israel, has been a beloved landmark since its completion in 1964. Designed by the acclaimed modernist architect Minoru Yamasaki, the synagogue’s iconic main sanctuary was recognized by the American Institute of Architects as one of Illinois’ 200 Great Places. Recently, Eckenhoff Saunders undertook the thoughtful revitalization of Frank Memorial Hall and Rebecca K. Crown Social Hall along with various security and operational upgrades.

Renovation of Frank Memorial Hall (4,900 sf)
A part of the original construction, the renovation of Frank Memorial Hall transformed it from a sedate and formal lobby space into a versatile, multi-functional community room. It now serves as a welcoming area for congregants to relax and connect throughout the week, an intimate venue for smaller, informal meetings, as a classroom for adult learning, while continuing to provide overflow space for large services. The updates allow for seamless connections to the north terrace or south lawn, enhancing its use for indoor-outdoor gatherings.

The revitalization features:

  • Refreshed finishes and reimagined lighting
  • Lounge furniture to enable casual gatherings, learning, music, and lectures
  • Upgraded technology and improved acoustics and hospitality

Renovation of Rebecca K. Crown Social Hall (5,300 sf)
Constructed in 1981 in a post-modern style, the Rebecca K. Crown Social Hall remains the centerpiece for the congregation’s large celebrations and gatherings. The renovation of this banquet and large meeting space focused on:

  • Supporting life-cycle events by introducing appealing contemporary finishes and captivating lighting
  • Incorporating adaptable technology suitable for social, learning, and cultural events
  • Enhancing HVAC and electrical systems for functionality and comfort
  • Replacing the original glazing for comfort and energy efficiency and to establish access to a new lakeside terrace suitable for hosting religious services and social celebrations.

In addition to these key spaces, improvements to the administrative offices and both the main and educational entries enhanced the staff work environment while also addressing the need for improved campus and building security. The revitalization of North Shore Congregation Israel ensures the synagogue continues to honor its architectural legacy while evolving to meet the modern needs of its congregation.
