After School Matters–Executive Offices
Chicago (Loop)
Eckenhoff Saunders partnered with After School Matters, a nationally recognized nonprofit that has served more than 350,000 Chicago teens and engages nearly 19,000 each year through arts and enrichment programs, for the design of its new executive offices. The project transformed an underutilized commercial suite into a modern, flexible workplace that reflects the organization’s mission and culture.
Design Approach
The design emphasizes transparency, collaboration, and inclusivity. Glass-fronted meeting rooms and offices line the central corridor, offering privacy while maintaining visual connection across the workplace. Open workstations are balanced with a variety of breakout zones, focus booths, and collaborative areas, giving staff choice and flexibility in how they work.
Key Features
- Mission-Driven Branding: The bold use of color, including After School Matters’ signature purple, creates a strong identity throughout. A custom graphic wall reinforces the organization’s citywide impact.
- Flexible Work Environments: Workstations, conference rooms, and informal meeting spaces support a range of workstyles, from heads-down focus to group collaboration.
- Community-Oriented Design: Shared café and lounge spaces encourage interaction, while open sightlines connect staff across teams.
- Wellness & Comfort: Natural light, ergonomic furnishings, and calming finishes contribute to a supportive, healthy work environment for staff and visitors.
Impact
The new executive offices provide After School Matters with a dynamic, mission-aligned workplace that fosters collaboration, inspires creativity, and reflects the organization’s commitment to empowering Chicago’s youth.
