Gottlieb ED Opens
Gottlieb Memorial Hospital’s renovated and expanded Emergency Department opened last week to meet the needs of Melrose Park and surrounding communities. Gottlieb is a member of Loyola Medicine, which includes Loyola University Medical Center and MacNeal Hospital. The Emergency Department is named in memory of Judd A. Weinberg, who, along with his late wife Marjorie, was instrumental in the growth and development of the hospital. Eckenhoff Saunders served as the lead architect and planner for the expansion and renovation.
The scope of services includes the renovation of the existing first floor west wing of the hospital for the new Emergency Department core and a new addition for the registration, lobby, and drive-up canopy/visitor’s entrance. The range of interior work includes a total of 23 treatment bays as outlined:
· 11 general exam rooms
· Two trauma rooms, providing negative pressure isolation when needed.
· Four behavioral health exam rooms
· Two triage rooms
· Four results pending bays

Support spaces include:
· Patient restrooms
· Staff locker rooms
· Staff breakroom
· Staff offices
· Clinical support areas (medication room, nourishment, lab, clean utility, soiled utility, and EVS closet)
· Team station
· Registration
· Public restrooms and waiting
· Expanded Ambulance Bay with separate access to the Emergency Department
The new Emergency Department improves patient and staff safety and anticipates the future trends and needs of the hospital. Specific attention was given to behavioral health, bariatric, and geriatric visitors. An overall improvement of the patient experience includes segregating entrances for staff, patients, and ambulances to improve access, minimizing wait times, and providing flexible treatment spaces.
