Concentrating on sinking an eight ball can sometimes lead to better problem solving than staring at a computer screen. Good workplace design for creative firms recognizes that fostering casual interaction among employees not only strengthens team camaraderie, but also establishes a work environment where good ideas occur everywhere.

The client recognized that it needed to create a work and recreation area where staff could “spread out their ideas,” both literally and figuratively. The solution: a flexible space that can host design charettes, client presentations, a model workshop, ad-hoc project storage, and an office-wide pool tournament.

The design converted an underutilized storage area adjacent to the firm’s studio into an open and versatile space. Mobile work surfaces can accommodate multiple configurations. Recycled building materials, expansive wall and display areas, and a stimulating color palette foster an open and productive creative environment.
